Take a Hike

Mendocino County has hundreds of trails for traversing. Whether an easy walk, a more strenuous hike or something in between, you have several options to get out in nature and explore the rugged beauty around the area – forests, coastline, valleys and mountains…our trails will leave you enchanted!

The Valley Below

Within Anderson Valley lies a hidden gem in Hendy Woods State Park. With a canopy of old-growth redwoods, the Navarro River running through it and both picnic and camping areas, Hendy Woods offers an ideal respite with easy walking trails, including the wheelchair accessible Discovery Trail.

Lake View

You don’t need to be on the coast to enjoy a waterside wander. Ukiah’s Lake Mendocino offers an easy jaunt along the water’s edge. Take some deep breaths for a relaxing and meditative stroll on the Shakota Trail.

Waterfall Wonder

Just east of Highway 1 in Mendocino, you can trek 2.5 miles along a fern fronds trail to view a pristine 35-foot waterfall amid towering redwoods…hence the name, Fern Canyon Trail. It’s all part of Russian Gulch State Park, featuring 15 miles of hiking trails.

Sacred Stornetta

The Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands became a California Coastal National Monument in 2014. These lands are ancestral and traditional to the Manchester Band of Pomo. With over 1,600 acres, this windswept bluff with prairies and birds offers peace, clarity, and a balm for the soul.

Stairway to Heaven

Level up your outdoor trek with a jaunt on the Jug Handle  Ecological Staircase Trail. Located in Caspar, midway between Fort Bragg and Mendocino village, the trail is only 2.5 miles but that staircase will test your stamina! Of course you can take it as slow or fast as you like while taking in the beauty of nature.

The Roads Less Traveled

Whether your walking south to north or north to south, the Noyo Headlands Trail in Fort Bragg offers an easy trek with stunning vistas and artisan benches to sit for a spell.  Or head to the lost coast for the Lost Coast Trail, part of the Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. Hike a nearly 2-mile loop of the Montgomery Trail at Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve (west of Ukiah), which has some of the tallest trees in the county – a fitting place for both ‘ahhh’ and ‘awe’ moments.
