This six-day road trip is designed for travelers who want to slow down and truly experience Northern California’s hidden gems where vineyard afternoons turn into forest train rides, and redwood mornings give way to dramatic coastal sunsets. Moving at an easy pace, this itinerary blends wine tasting, local food, live music, historic attractions and unforgettable scenery, creating a journey that feels romantic, adventurous, and deeply rooted in place.

Day 1

Afternoon

Arrive in Hopland and check into the Thatcher Hotel, a thoughtfully restored historic landmark that blends early-1900’s character with modern comfort. Once settled, take a short walk to Café Poppy for an afternoon treat. This charming café is a lovely stop for coffee, tea or something sweet and sets an easy, welcoming tone for the trip.

After your café stop, head to Brutocao Cellars for a relaxed wine country experience. Spend the afternoon tasting estate-grown wines, enjoying vineyard views and playing a friendly game of bocce ball, an ideal way to slow down and ease into vacation mode.

Evening

For dinner, head to Osha Thai, a newer addition to Hopland’s dining scene. Enjoy flavorful Thai dishes in a cozy setting, a perfect end to your first evening. After dinner, return to the Thatcher Hotel and unwind, ready for the adventures ahead.

Day 2

Morning

Begin the day with breakfast at Bluebird Café in Hopland, a longtime local favorite known for hearty breakfasts, house-made classics and strong coffee. It’s a relaxed place to ease into the morning before the drive. After breakfast, check out of the Thatcher Hotel and start heading north, enjoying the changing scenery as vineyards give way to rolling hills.

Afternoon

On the way to Willits, stop in Ukiah at Low Gap Park for a round of disc golf. The course winds through oak woodland and open hillsides, offering scenic views and a fun way to stretch your legs after the drive. Once finished, head downtown for lunch at Patrona, where flavorful dishes and a comfortable atmosphere make it an ideal midday stop. After lunch, continue on to Willits and check into Baechtel Creek Inn, a charming creekside property conveniently located near downtown.

Evening

For dinner, make your way to Ramen Cubed, a standout spot in Willits known for its rich broths, perfectly cooked noodles and cozy, modern vibe. After dinner, take a short stroll through downtown, often there is a well-curated art show at theWillits Center for the Arts, or catch a movie at the charming Noyo Theater

Day 3

Morning

Start the day with breakfast at Brickhouse Coffee, a local favorite known for quality coffee, espresso drinks and simple breakfast bites. It’s a relaxed, welcoming spot to ease into the morning before a day of exploring. After breakfast, head to the Historic Mendocino County Museum, where engaging exhibits highlight the region’s Native history, logging era and railroad roots, adding depth and context to the landscapes you’ve been traveling through.

Afternoon

For lunch, visit North Spur Brewing Company, where house-brewed beers and a hearty menu create an easygoing midday stop. After lunch, enjoy time strolling through downtown Willits, browsing local shops and soaking up the town’s laid-back charm. Later in the afternoon, board the Skunk Train for a scenic ride through towering redwoods and peaceful forest corridors one of the most memorable experiences of the trip.

Evening

After returning from the Skunk Train, head to Flying Dog Wood Fired Pizza for dinner. Known for artisan pizzas, creative toppings and a cozy atmosphere, it’s a perfect place to unwind after a full day. After dinner, take a leisurely walk through downtown Willits or return to Baechtel Creek Inn to relax and enjoy a quiet, restful evening.

Day 4

Morning

Check out of Baechtel Creek Inn and begin the day with a stop at Kemmy’s Pies in Willits. Known for its homemade pies, pastries, and comforting options, it’s a memorable and delicious way to start the drive to the coast. After breakfast, head west toward Fort Bragg, enjoying the scenic transition from redwood forest to ocean air.

Afternoon

Arrive in Fort Bragg and head to Glass Beach to explore during low tide, when smooth sea glass, tide pools and dramatic coastal rock formations are most visible. Take your time wandering the shoreline and soaking in the fresh sea air. After your beach walk, enjoy lunch at Los Gallitos, a local favorite for flavorful Mexican dishes. Following lunch, spend some time exploring downtown Fort Bragg, browsing shops and galleries before checking into Harbor Lite Lodge, where ocean views set a calm, coastal tone.

Evening

For dinner, enjoy a relaxed meal at Asian Fusion, offering creative dishes in a cozy setting. After dinner, stop by Cowlick’s Ice Cream for a sweet treat, then head to the Skunk Train’s Glen Blair Bar for a unique evening experience tucked among the redwoods before returning to your hotel for the night.

Day 5

Morning

Start the day with breakfast at HarborView Bistro, where classic breakfast dishes are served alongside peaceful views of the working harbor. It’s a relaxed way to ease into the morning before heading out to explore. After breakfast, drive north to MacKerricher State Beach and spend time walking the coastal trails, wandering the dunes, and enjoying wide ocean views and fresh sea air.

Afternoon

After your beach walk, head into downtown Fort Bragg to explore and visit the Triangle Tattoo & Museum, a unique stop that highlights the history and artistry of tattoo culture through vintage tools, artwork and displays. From there, make your way back down to Noyo Harbor for lunch at Princess Seafood, a local favorite known for its fresh, no-frills seafood right on the water.

After lunch, stop by Schaubelt Distillery to sample locally crafted spirits and enjoy the lively harbor atmosphere. Take your time here before heading out to enjoy the rest of the afternoon.

Evening

As the day winds down, head back into the harbor to The Wharf in Fort Bragg, where hearty coastal dishes and harbor views make for a satisfying end to the day. After dinner, return to Harbor Lite Lodge for a restful evening by the ocean.

Day 6

Morning

Wake up at Harbor Lite Lodge, enjoy a final look at the ocean, and check out. Begin the day with a stop at A Frame Espresso for a thoughtfully crafted coffee or espresso drink an ideal pick-me-up before the scenic coastal drive south. Afterward, make your way toward Point Arena, enjoying dramatic ocean views along the way.

Afternoon

Arrive at the Point Arena Lighthouse and check into your on-site lodging for the evening. Take some time to explore the lighthouse grounds, walk along the bluffs, and take in sweeping views of the Pacific from one of the most striking stretches of coastline in the state. After settling in, head into town to catch a show or film at the Arena Theater, a charming historic venue that adds a cultural highlight to the afternoon. After the show, grab a late lunch at The Record, a local favorite known for its relaxed atmosphere and satisfying comfort food. Return to the coast side to watch the sunset in Point Arena, where rugged cliffs and crashing waves create a truly memorable evening moment.

Evening

For dinner, enjoy a meal at Gama, known for its welcoming atmosphere and well-prepared dishes that make for a perfect final coastal dinner. Afterward, return to the lighthouse to settle in for a peaceful night surrounded by ocean air and star-filled skies.

Day 7

Morning

Check out of your lighthouse lodging and head into town for a grab and go breakfast at Franny’s Cup & Saucer. This cozy café is a wonderful final stop for a warm, comforting treat and good coffee before beginning the journey home.

Afternoon

Leave Point Arena and drive inland through Anderson Valley, enjoying vineyard views and quiet country roads. Stop at Hendy Woods State Park for a beautiful midafternoon hike among old-growth redwoods. The flat trails along the river make this an easy, peaceful walk and a perfect final nature experience.

After your hike, head to The Boonville Distillery for lunch. Relax with locally inspired dishes and spirits, reflecting on the trip before beginning the final leg of the drive home.

Best Time to Visit:

Late spring and early fall are ideal for this journey, offering mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and vibrant scenery. Spring brings lush landscapes and blooming wildflowers, while fall delivers golden light, harvest season energy, and clearer coastal views.

Bring comfortable walking shoes for beaches, forest trails, and town exploration. Light layers are essential for cool mornings, warmer afternoons, and breezy coastal evenings. A small daypack is useful for kayaking outings, train rides, and relaxed day-long adventures.
