Mendocino Tree House – an exquisite, design-led Californian tree-treat with an al fresco spa oasis, thoughtfully crafted around a living, centuries-old redwood in a peaceful grove that’s close to the coast
Deeply secluded amid soaring, centuries-old Californian redwoods, Mendocino Tree House is a sublime architectural escape for creative souls, wildlife-watchers, and dedicated lovers of luxury alike.
The intricately crafted octagonal retreat sleeps up to six guests: ideal for couples, small families, or groups of friends searching for a beautiful and memorable place to retreat from the world-at-large. Every last detail has been meticulously curated by owners Bret and Phil, to help you relax and focus on the finer things in life.
Unwind over well-deserved drinks in the spacious, mid-century-furnished open concept living and dining room, with its warming fireplace and incredible views of the whispering redwood grove beyond. Cook up a storm in the sleek, high-quality kitchen, or fire up the barbecue for a sizzling supper. Choose your favourite of two stylish bedrooms, each one boasting high-quality bedding for dreamy nights of slumber.
For slightly larger groups, or families with children, each bedroom closet includes auto-inflating air mattresses with sheet sets, while the master bedroom includes a workspace for those who need to stay in touch with real life (though you’ll likely come up with every excuse under the sun not to!)
You’ll also discover unique and authentic works of art situated throughout the house, hand-picked by Bret and Phil to accentuate the awe-inspiring natural surroundings and inspire a sense of creativity and wonder. And with not one but two sumptuous bathrooms on hand, there’ll be no need to queue for that all-important morning freshen-up.
Of course, when you’re holidaying in California the life al fresco reigns supreme – so there’s just as much heady opulence to savour outside! Simply laze on the wraparound deck to feel perfectly at one with the forest. You could also take a wander along the pathways that wind around the nearby fruit trees… where you’ll also find cosy egg chair swings that are perfect for curling up with a book.
When the stars come out to play, light the firepit and tell laughter-fuelled stories, or indulge in the spa oasis that includes a hot tub, a wood-fired sauna, and an invigorating al fresco shower. If you prefer a long bubble-soak, no problem, as there’s also an elegant clawfoot tub just waiting to be filled.
If you feel inclined to leave your new-found sanctuary, you’ll find Bret and Phil’s guidebook packed with suggestions of local places to eat, drink, visit, and be merry (their Anderson Valley Wineries Map is a particular gem!) A must-visit is the Mendocino Art Center, which established the town as an artists’ colony in the 1950’s and 60’s and is now a world-renowned haven.
You could also pack a picnic and pay a visit to Big River Beach, set within the jaw-dropping, 7,400-acre Headlands State Park. Or for moments tailor-made for Instagram, take a 20-minute trip to Glass Beach and marvel at the gleaming multi-coloured glass mixed in with the pebbles.
One thing is for certain: however you choose to spend your precious holiday time at Mendocino Tree House, it’s going to be an immersive experience to remember forever.
