343 N Main St, Fort Bragg, CA, 95437

The Guest House was built in 1892 by the Fort Bragg Redwood Company as a private residence for the Johnson Family who owned the company. It served as a showplace for Union Lumber wood products and it was constructed from the finest old-growth redwood and contained 67,000 board feet of lumber. Noteworthy are the ornate woodwork, decorative moldings, door and window trim, and the spool, and spindle banisters of the staircase along with the stained glass windows above the stairway’s first landing.

Today the Guest House Museum today serves as the headquarters of the Fort Bragg – Mendocino Coast Historical Society. The public is encouraged to explore this architectural marvel and discover the history of the town and the timber industry along the Mendocino Coast.

The Fort Bragg California Historical Landmark sits in front of the house. Fort Bragg (the fort) was founded in 1857 prior to the American Civil War as a military garrison rather than a fortification. It was named after army officer Braxton Bragg, who at the time had served the U.S. in the Mexican–American War. The city was incorporated in 1889.
