Just north of Fort Bragg, MacKerricher State Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, offering a rich mix of habitats, from beaches and forests to wetlands and open ocean. Keep an eye out for Downy Woodpeckers, Western Scrub-Jays, Golden-crowned Kinglets, and many other feathered residents.

Lush, primeval Montgomery Woods is where you will find the world’s oldest and biggest redwoods, and the many birds who dwell in the tall trees. Look for the Cedar Waxwing, the Pacific Wren, and the majestic red-tailed hawk.

While Mendocino is known for its giant redwoods, the unique geology of this swath of the Coast range features a pygmy forest! Hike the 2.5 mile Ecological Staircase Trail, learn about this unique and beautiful place, and keep your eyes open for birds!
