SUMMARY:Whale Watch Room Gallery Exhibit Opening Reception - Tempra Board
DESCRIPTION:This Whale Watch Room Gallery Exhibit features artwork by Tempra Board; opening reception on September 12\, 2026\, at 5 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display from 9/12 through 12/13/2026. Jewelry by Ling-Yen Jones continues to be on display. \nExhibit Statement: The northern Sonoma and southern Mendocino County coastal areas are affectionately known by locals as “Mendonoma.” The area is rugged\, remote\, and dominated by nature. When I stand on the wild edge between land and sea\, surrounded by the open sky\, often beset by strong wind\, I welcome the humble and expansive feeling of being a tiny part of a vast world. My work attempts to capture this feeling. The dynamic landscapes\, flora\, and fauna of the Mendonoma coast are an unending inspiration for my paintings. \nI am also inspired by old WPA lithograph posters and wood block prints\, and the graphic nature of my work shows these influences. The images here are drawn by hand on smooth Bristol paper using black ink outlines and colorful Illustrator markers\, then are made into a series of collectible giclée prints using archival inks on archival cotton rag paper. (Please note that all of the framed pieces are covered in special UV-protection\, no-glare plexiglass\, but real glass is available at no cost by contacting me at 530.828.3406 or tempra@tempraboard.com.) \nI have also begun experimenting with oil painting\, and am especially interested in\ncapturing the shapes and shadows of the Point Arena Lighthouse using unique cropped perspectives. \nArtist Bio: I am a mostly self-trained artist working in ink\, markers\, watercolor\, graphite\, colored pencil\, collage\, and oil. I have studied with Mendonoma-based artists Mike Henderson (graphite)\, Andrea Allen (Chinese brush painting in sumi ink)\, and Kathleen Alexander (watercolor)\, as well as Humboldt-County-based oil painter Rachel Schlueter. I have also studied botanical illustration in graphite\, ink\, and watercolor through the New York Botanical Garden’s continuing education program. \nAfter a lifetime of wrongly believing that I “had no talent\,” I began drawing and painting in earnest when I was introduced to nature journaling during COVID. Since then\, I have tried to quiet my inner critic and simply play and practice\, the keys to success. I take my inspiration from living on The Sea Ranch\, with its mesmerizing and constantly changing landscapes\, and native plants\, birds\, and other wildlife. \nIn 2024\, wanting to bridge my skills in graphic layout\, writing\, and art\, I launched Mark Makers’ Quarterly (MMQ)\, a print journal of rural California art and artists (markmakersquarterly.com). In 2026\, in partnership with artist Kathleen Alexander\, I launched the Grey Whale Gallery\, art studio\, and workshops on The Sea Ranch (greywhalegallery.com).

SUMMARY:Full Harvest Moon Night Tour
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 26 – Gates open at 6:30 p.m.\, Tour around 7 p.m. \nExperience a spectacular nighttime view . . . \n. . . from atop the Point Arena Lighthouse. Enjoy a panoramic view of the sea and coast from the lantern room at the top of the Tower\, and if the weather cooperates it will be illuminated by the full moon! Our docents and guides will help you experience what it was like to be a Lighthouse Keeper and climb the Tower at night. They will guide you on your journey into the past and explain the unique history of this historic landmark\, the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast. Champagne\, sparkling juice\, and sweet and savory snacks will be served as part of the tour\, and you get to take home an etched Point Arena Lighthouse champagne flute as a souvenir of this unique experience! \nThe Harvest Moon is the moon that falls near the autumnal equinox. This full Moon provides the most light at the time when it’s needed most—to complete the harvest. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac full moon names were used by early Colonial Americans who learned the names from the local Native Americans. Indigenous people did not record time by using the months of the Julian or Gregorian calendar. Many tribes kept track of time by observing the seasons and lunar months\, although there was much variability. The September full moon is also called the Full Corn Moon because it traditionally corresponds with the time of harvesting corn. It is also called the Barley Moon because this is the time to harvest and thresh ripened barley. Some other traditional September Full Moon names used by Native Americans include “Moon When the Plums Are Scarlet” (Lakota Sioux)\, “Moon When the Deer Paw the Earth” (Omaha Native Americans)\, and “Moon When the Calves Grow Hair” (Sioux Native Americans). \nAll proceeds go toward supporting and maintaining the Lighthouse Tower\, Museum\, and grounds. Thank you for your generous support\, Point Arena Lighthouse Keepers\, Inc. Tickets are $50 each. \nReservations must be made by phone at 877-725-4448 ext. 1 or 707-882-2809 ext. 1 or in person no later than 3:30 p.m. three (3) days before the event date.
