SUMMARY:Mushroom Walks at the Botanical Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Take a guided tour of the MCBG Mushroom Collection! The Gardens is home to more than 160 species of wild mushrooms during fall and winter. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of macrofungi. Generally hidden underground\, these reproductive structures lie dormant until the rainy season\, when they sprout above the soil from organic material. \nEnjoy this introduction to mushroom identification\, followed by a guided walk with Naturalist and Mycologist Mario Abreu\, each Monday from November 16 through December 21. Mario will begin with an approximately 45-minute introduction\, followed by a 2-hour guided field walk. \nMushrooms found at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens should stay at Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens… \nPlease\, DO NOT PICK OR COLLECT from our botanical collection! \nThe Details: \nTerrain: The Field Walk includes main trails\, narrower side trails with some uneven terrain\, and occasional off-trail exploration. The walk also involves standing for extended periods. DESCRIPTION:While we wait patiently for peak season… let’s learn where our magnificent mushrooms like to live! Join Naturalist and Mycologist Mario Abreu for a visual presentation on mushrooms and their substrates\, followed by a brief walk to find some examples in the Gardens. This class will explore common mushroom habitats with a focus on the associated trees. Mario will also cover how mushrooms benefit from trees\, tree identification basics\, which mushroom species are associated with certain trees\, and more. \nThe Details​:\nClass size is limited; advanced reservations are required. \nThe class will include indoor instruction followed by a brief field walk. Be prepared for the weather with appropriate layers. \nWe recommend bringing along a refillable water bottle\, a notebook\, and a pen or pencil. \nClass Registration: \nCapacity is limited! Registration for this presentation must be completed in advance online or at the MCBG Store. \nThe registration fee is $36.00 per participant and covers your admission for the day. The discounted rate for current MCBG Members is $26.00 – sign in to access your discount. \nAll fees are non-refundable unless the walk has been canceled or rescheduled by the Gardens. Proceeds support our nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
