SUMMARY:Coast Highway Art Collective featured artists Tomomi Hamano\, jewelry & Geraldine LiaBraaten\, photography
DESCRIPTION:Coast Highway Art Collective\nOpening reception – jewelry and photography\nThe public is invited to an opening reception and exhibit at CHAC\, featuring two exciting artists\, Tomomi Hamano\, jewelry\, and Geraldine LiaBraaten\, photography. Join the members of the Coast Highway Art Collective on Saturday\, Aug. 1 from 3 to 7pm. The gallery is full of creative and eclectic art\, so plan to spend the afternoon\, leisurely surveying the art while meeting the artists. \nTomomi Hamano\nHamano obtained a BFA in Graphic Design from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena\, CA. While working as a designer and co-owner of a graphic design company\, she developed a passion for making jewelry and became a self-taught jeweler. \n“What fascinates me about jewelry is how it looks and feels different depending on who wears it\, explains Hamano. “I love creating unique pieces that elevate people’s confidence and become a part of their personal beauty.” Tomomi Hamano Jewelry is known for its simple\, clean lines\, where form\, scale\, and balance are essential. \nFor her first exhibition at the Coast Highway Art Collective (CHAC)\, she created a collection using gems inspired by the sea. Every piece celebrates what the ocean has to offer us. \nGeraldine LiaBraaten\nFor LiaBraaten\, it’s all about color. “Color is my life\, LiaBraaten declares. “If I lived on the island of the colorblind I would just fade away to nothing. My house is a riot of color: turquoise kitchen\, red couch\, fuchsia duvet\, yellow pillows. And don’t get me started on my wardrobe: there’s a reason my nickname is “Flamboya.”\nLiaBraaten says she’s done it all: media assignments of newsworthy events\, stock photography\, outdoor art fairs\, gallery exhibits and nonprofit fundraisers. Through it all\, her style has remained consistent: She likes color\, diagonals\, pattern and oddness. Over time she’s gotten closer and closer to her subjects\, evolving from large panoramas to small semi-abstracts. The element of surprise\, plus recognition and discovery are part of what she wants to give the viewer: from “What the heck IS that?” to “Aha!”\nLiaBraaten says she doesn’t do darkroom work or image manipulation\, not out of any purist mindset but because she has no patience with technology\, nor interest in changing the images. “What I saw through the viewfinder is what you get in the image\,” she says. \nThe show runs from Aug. 1 through Aug. 31. The Coast Highway Art Collective is located at 284 Main St.\, Point Arena\, the little red building with the big yellow sun\, located next to the Redwood Coast Credit Union. Regular hours are Thursday through Saturday\, 11 am to 4 pm. and Sundays by appointment. Visit the website at www.coast-highway-artists.com for information about the collective’s artists\, upcoming events and how to join. To find out more about becoming a member of the Collective or to schedule a Sunday visit\, contact Ling-Yen Jones at 707-884-9153 or via the website above.

SUMMARY:"GLORIOUS! The True Story of Florence Foster Jenkins\, the Worst Singer in the World" at Mendocino Theatre Company
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to present the third production in this 50th Anniversary Season. Based on the real life story of Florence Foster Jenkins\,\n“Glorious! The True Story of Florence Foster Jenkins\, The Worst Singer in the World”\nis a hilarious and heartfelt romp about Lady Florence\, who fancied herself a great operatic diva\, but was more commonly known as the ‘first lady of the sliding scale.’ In other words\, she sang horribly! The play is set in New York in late summer/early fall of 1944\, while World War II raged across two oceans. In this inspirational and wildly profound true story\, Lady Florence lives her life exactly as she wants it to be – as a significantly untalented public opera singer! Her magnetic personality and determinedly positive outlook on her own lack of talent will sweep you up into her final appearance at Carnegie Hall.\n“Delightful and blissfully funny.” – Daily Telegraph \n“Hilarious and touching.” – Daily Mail\n“A glittering comedy with a heart… lunatically funny.” – Sunday Times\n“In Peter Quilter’s touching play… what begins as a joke becomes a lesson in how to live your dream.” – The Daily Express\n“Comically sublime.” – The Guardian
