SUMMARY:SPACE Presents Forces of Nature
DESCRIPTION:SPACE Presents Forces of Nature \nOver 100 Local Students Take the Stage in Original Dance Production Forces of Nature\nOriginally written in 2016 by Laurel Near and Amanda Rosenberg now re-written and directed by Amanda Rosenberg-Gutierrez.\nThe performances will be held at the SPACE Theater (508 W. Perkins St.\, Ukiah) on Friday\, May 22 at 6:00 PM\, Saturday\, May 23 at 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM\, and Sunday\, May 24 at 2:00 PM.\nMore than 100 young performers ages 6 to 17 will take the stage this May in an original full-length dance production titled Forces of Nature\, a powerful exploration of how the elements of the natural world mirror human emotion.\nBlending street dance\, hip hop\, modern dance\, jazz\, spoken word\, and live vocals\, Forces of Nature moves through wind\, rain\, roots\, fire\, pressure\, love\, release\, and renewal — revealing how nature’s cycles reflect our own inner landscapes.\n“Nature doesn’t just surround us — it lives within us\,” says the show’s director. “Through movement\, these students explore themes like community\, resilience\, passion\, belonging\, and growth. It’s about understanding that the same forces that shape mountains and oceans also shape who we are.”\nThe show opens with a spoken word piece and live percussion heartbeat\, symbolizing the shared pulse of humanity. Throughout the evening\, dancers move through explosive hip hop sequences\, lyrical modern works\, and emotionally charged ensemble pieces\, culminating in a full-cast finale celebrating unity and connection.\nAt its core\, the production carries a timely message: pressure builds\, storms pass\, and from fire comes renewal. In nature\, nothing truly ends — it transforms. The same is true for us.\nGeneral admission tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 18\, and are available at The Mendocino Book Company (cash or check)\, Brown Bear Toys (cash or check)\, online at www.spaceperformingarts.org and the SPACE Box Office. The SPACE Theater is located at 508 W. Perkins St.\, Ukiah. For more information\, call 462-9370 or visit www.spaceperformingarts.org.

SUMMARY:"Dancing Lessons" by Mark St. Germain at Mendocino Theatre Company
DESCRIPTION:Dancing Lessons tells the story of Ever\, a young man with Asperger’s syndrome\, who seeks the instruction of a Broadway dancer to learn enough dancing to survive an awards dinner. The dancer\, Senga\, however\, is recovering from an injury that may stop her dancing career permanently. As their relationship unfolds\, they’re both caught off-guard by the discoveries – both hilarious and heartwarming – that they make about each other and about themselves.\nDANCING LESSONS is a play about risk taking and finding the courage to step outside our comfort zones; it is a story about what seeming opposites can teach each other\, and it is a tale which offers no pat answers – only the comfort of human contact and sharing. \n“extraordinary romantic comedy … 90 minutes of theater that are never less than provocative\, fresh\, and unexpectedly moving. “\nThe Arts Fuse\n“…a poignant\, quirky romantic comedy that becomes a heartwarming pas de deux between its injured dancer heroine and a geoscientist with Asperger’s Syndrome\, charting the uncharted territory of human friendship and intimacy. “\nBROADWAY WORLD\n“What would happen if the autism gene was eliminated from the gene pool? You would have a bunch of people standing around in a cave\, chatting and socializing and not getting anything done.”\n– Temple Grandin\n“Those who dance are considered insane by those who cannot hear the music.”\n– George Carlin \nPreviews:\nThursday\, May 7 – 7:30 p.m.\nFriday\, May 8 – 7:30 p.m.\nTickets – $16.25 – $21.50\nGala Opening:\nSaturday\, May 9 – 7:30 p.m.\nTickets – $26.25 – $56.50\nPay What You Will Performance:\nThursday\, May 14 – 7:30 p.m.\nPlaying May 7 – May 31\nThursday\, Friday\, Saturday – 7:30 p.m.\nSunday matinee – 2:00 p.m.\n$21.25 – $37.50 \nTickets available at www.mendocinotheatre.org or 707-937-4477 \nWith Lucas Kiehn-Thilman and Nikki Traber
