Mendocino Coast Purple Urchin Festival

The US’ first-ever Urchin Festival to take place in California June 2022 Purple Sea Urchins and Kelp take the center stage on the Mendocino Coast.

Visit Coastal Mendocino County June 17th to June 19th, in celebration of these delicious, invasive, spiky creatures. This will be a weekend of incredible food prepared by world-class chefs, hands-on education about the complex ecology of the Pacific Ocean, cracking and preparation demos, and so much more!

Proceeds benefit the Noyo Center for Marine Science and the Mendocino Area Parks Association.

Events included:
Friday, June 17 at Noon: Outdoor Demo and 5-course purple urchin tasting menu ($150/pp) presented by Urchinomics and Chef Matthew Kammerer at Michelin-starred Harbor House Inn.  Additional wine pairing option is $90/pp.

Saturday, June 18

10:30 AM:  Uni Demo and educational talk at Van Damme State Beach.  Included samples of fresh uni on the beach.  Rep from Waterman’s Alliance and international free dive competitor of The Freedive Shop demonstrate how to open and clean urchin, and you’ll learn how to harvest urchin, as well as discover the impact of purple urchin on fisheries, plus learn about solutions to the problem.

3:00 PM:  Sake Seminar at Little River Inn with sake expert Kerry Tamura of World Sake Imports.  Sample seven different Japanese sakes, highlighting the features of the terroir. Paired with uni snacks, enjoy this delicacy of urchin and sake.

Sunday, June 19

10:00 AM:  Join producers of the upcoming film Sequoias of the Sea, along with Noyo Center Executive Director for an in-depth look at sea creatures along coastal California. View a trailer of the documentary at Little River Inn’s Abalone Hall.  Includes complimentary coffee & scones.

11:00 AM – 5:00 PM:  Learn about all things Urchin and Kelp at Noyo Center for Marine Science in Fort Bragg.

7:30 PM:  Enjoy a concert at Abalone Hall at Little River Inn with musicians Cheryl Wheeler and Kenny White.  Tickets are limited and available through Brownpapertickets.com

During the three day festival hotels and restaurants along the coast, including The Harbor House Inn, Little River Inn, Noyo Harbor Inn, Glendeven Inn & Lodge, The Inn at The Cobbler’s Walk, Princess Seafood Market & Deli, and the soon to open Izakaya Gama in Point Arena, will be serving urchin-focused menus, and specials.
