Pronounced wa-LA-la, this coastal community's name comes from the Kashaya Pomo Indian phrase, “ah kha wa la lee” which means, “where the water flows down.” That makes sense, as this is where the river goes out to the ocean right across from the center of town.

Gualala is located north of The Sea Ranch and south of Point Arena, on the Pacific coast at the mouth of the Gualala River, on State Route 1. Gualala was once a logging town, but tourism is now its central economic activity.

Things to do in the area  include the Gualala Arts Center, Gualala River Redwood Park, the annual Gualala Auto Show, and B. Bryan Preserve in nearby Point Arena.
