A Romantic Whale Festival Weekend in Mendocino

March is one of the most magical times to visit the Mendocino Coast. Gray whales migrate just offshore, wildflowers begin to bloom and the annual Whale Festival fills Mendocino with food, wine and coastal charm. This long weekend is designed for couples who want to slow down, soak it all in and enjoy a balance of festivities, spa time and unforgettable ocean views.

Day 1

Afternoon

Arrive on the Mendocino Coast in the early afternoon and head straight into town for lunch at Gnar Bar, a relaxed local favorite known for bold flavors and coastal comfort food. Be sure to order their signature crab cakes award-winning for two years running and widely considered some of the best on the coast.

After lunch, make your way to Sweetwater Inn & Spa and check in. Spend the afternoon unwinding at the spa, rotating between the sauna and your private outdoor hot tub overlooking the Pacific. As you soak, keep your eyes on the horizon, March is peak whale migration season, and it’s not uncommon to spot gray whales passing just offshore.

Evening

After a restorative spa session, return to your room to relax and freshen up before dinner. As evening settles in, head out for a cozy, candle-lit meal at Luna Trattoria, where handmade pastas and seasonal Italian dishes set the tone for a romantic first night on the Mendocino Coast.

Day 2

Morning

Wake up refreshed and head into Mendocino for breakfast at GoodLife Café & Bakery. Grab coffee and a light but satisfying bite before a full day of tasting and celebrating.

Afternoon

Spend the day immersed in the Mendocino Whale Festival festivities. Wander through town enjoying the Whale Wine Walk, popping into local shops and galleries while sampling regional wines. Pair that with the beloved chowder tasting, where restaurants serve up their best bowls creamy, briny and deeply comforting.

By late afternoon, when you’re pleasantly full, slow things down with a stop at Patterson’s Pub for a shared small bite or a drink. It’s a great place to rest your feet and people-watch as the festival energy hums around you.

Evening

For dinner, treat yourselves to a classic Mendocino experience at Café Beaujolais. Known for its refined, locally inspired menu, this is the perfect setting to toast a day filled with wine, chowder and coastal celebration.
