Willits Center for the Arts presents Contemporary Indigenous Art

Willits Center for the Arts will display a collection of upscaled contemporary wearable art by Native families and tribal youth from Mendocino and Lake County.  Melody Williams, Monique Sonoquie, and Indigenous Community Initiatives will be displayed, with Northern Pomo language, recycled materials, and traditional basket designs incorporated into the pieces. Pomo tribal elder Wanda Quitiquit from Robinson Rancheria will also exhibit her unique painted gourds, which include geometric shapes and Pomo basket designs. Inspired by culture, family, and tradition, this exhibit also recognizes Indigenous Matriarchs who have preserved native knowledge, nurtured future generations, and served as leaders within their communities. Contemporary Indigenous Art opens on Saturday October 3 from 6 to 8pm, with a festive gathering with food & refreshments, at 71 East Commercial St. in downtown Willits.
