Nine short, fable-like vignettes are set in the mythical town of Almost, Maine on a magical winter night under the northern lights. Each story explores themes of love, loss, longing, and hope, often featuring characters who experience surreal, sometimes magical, circumstances that alter their relationships. The play, as a whole, connects these individual tales through the common setting, the mystical presence of the aurora borealis, and the universal power of the human heart. Almost, Maine premiered at the Portland Stage Company in 2004, breaking records and quickly becoming one of the most popular plays in United States.
“No matter what stage of life you are in, no matter what your relationship status, there’s something you can relate to in this play, I can almost guarantee it. The perfectly bookended beginning and ending scenes, plus the absolute realness of every single situation and the emotions that come with them being beautifully displayed, was enough to make me almost cry. Almost.”
