About the South Coast
Experience a taste of African wildlife up close and personal on Mendocino’s South Coast at the B. Bryan Preserve in Point Arena. Committed to the breeding and conservation of African Hoof Stock, they currently raise, breed and study Roan, Sable and Greater Kudu Antelope as well as Grevy’s and Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra. Tours are available by appointment.
One of the highlights of the South Coast is the Point Arena Lighthouse Tower. At 115 ft. high, the recently renovated viewing platform on top is your perfect vantage point to see migrating
whales, sea lions, and dozens of fascinating seabirds. Visit the museum and shop next door to shop for one of a kind gifts and view wonderful artifacts from the South Coast’s nautical past.
Just south of the Point Arena Lighthouse is a stretch of beach that features prehistoric boulders that have been finely ground down over the millennia into perfectly smooth spherical shapes. The display is especially magnificent at low tide. The geology of the area is unique and gives visitors the opportunity to view examples of significant bluff erosion, earth strata, and fossils that are as much 7 million years old. Access it from Schooner Gulch State Beach.
