The Museum presents items from the collection in public exhibits and provides access procedures for research of artifacts. Further enhancement of county heritage is promoted by Grassroots History Publications, the publications function which publishes books on local history subjects and presents them for sale on-line (see Book & Gift Store in the sidebar), or in an interesting and diverse store located in the Museum. Transportation history--focused particularly on railroads--is enhanced by association with Roots of Motive Power, a volunteer organization dedicated to the collection and preservation of unique equipment used in the lumber industry and in the overall development of Mendocino County. "Roots" maintains a nearly one mile long circular track for demonstration of the trains on special days. Exhibits on this subject are presented in museum galleries. The sprawling complex (photo above) includes galleries, archives, research libraries, classrooms, and an Engine House with two railroad tracks for display of historic train engines and equipment, and is adjacent to the Willits Branch Library, Roots of Motive Power, Inc., newly completed Gordon Logan Memorial Athletic Fields, Willits Skate Park, Willits Frontier Days Rodeo Grounds and Recreation Grove with outstanding picnic facilities and children's playground help make your visit a complete experience.
