Yahoo! Voices: A Cottage Near Wild Animals

 I really enjoyed the attractions of Point Arena, a small town in northern California. This vacation was very different because I stayed in a cabin at the B. Bryan Preserve near the zebras and antelopes! Their guests and the public join the Preserve's animal feeding tour once each day with reservations. Before or after the exciting tour, there was plenty of time to walk around and discover the 110 acre Preserve and the sights of the area.

Their accommodations are like small houses. The Chapel Cottage had beautiful stained-glass windows, antiques, outside hot tub, and a spectacular location facing the lake. Other accommodations included the Carriage House with a mix of antiques, 60's rock posters and local collections. The Bridge Cottage, also on the pond, seemed to be hidden by the trees. All accommodations have fully-equipped kitchens.www.bbryanpreserve.com

Pirate Cove Restaurant:

Instead of cooking in my Chapel cabin's kitchen, I followed the local's recommendation and ate at the Pirate Cove Restaurant.

The menu included Mexican and American cuisine along with appetizers, sandwiches and desserts. They served the biggest burrito I have ever seen! The burrito included a choice of meat with rice, beans, salsa, sour cream, guacamole and Mozzarella cheese wrapped in a flour tortilla. Of course the restaurant served other Mexican favorites.

If you are really hungry, try Bistec Ranchero, a grilled steak topped with a mild red sauce served with rice, beans and warm tortillas.

Although the spicy prawns are not too spicy, George, the manager, will bring more spices to make it hotter! He wants you to specify your "heat" preference- mild, spicy or muy picoso. The spicy prawns are prepared with onions in a smoked chipotle sauce and served over Spanish rice. Pirate's Cove Restaurant, 405 School Street, Point Arena.

Things to see around Point Arena;
In Point Arena, visit the authentic light house where you can walk up to the top. Point Arena is only one mile from the coast for surfing, fishing and sightseeing. www.visitcalifornia.com
