There is no Los Angeles here, no San Francisco, San Diego or Long Beach.  Mendocino County has no thriving metropolis, no large center of commerce or industry.

It is the Cinderella of California, the less-recognized sister to the state's more glamorous starlets. Except in Mendocino County, the slipper is always in place and the clock never strikes midnight. For Mendocino is perpetually beautiful. And no matter where one is – be it on the coast, driving through the redwoods or at a winery or brewpub – it's a ball all the time.

This is a guide to the scenic drives of Mendocino County. So fill up the tank, put on the sunglasses, drop the top if you've got a convertible and get those Buffett tunes loaded onto the iPod. It's time to roll through Mendocino. One of the signature landmarks in the state of California is not the Golden Gate Bridge, the Santa Monica Pier or even the Hollywood sign.

Singing and Courting

According to Ron LaValley, expert birder and talented photographer, most of the shorebirds have passed through by now, but you can still see and hear guillemots singing and courting in the mornings. Ron says he thinks some of them are on eggs in their burrows.

Go Fly A Kite!

Maybe I should say, COME fly a kite – and enjoy so much more! Saturday June 12,  noon to 4 pm at Todd Point, just west of the miniature golf course. Not certain how to get to Todd’s Point? It’s easy – just look up when you’re on Highway 1 near Highway 20, and work your way west to the sky full of kites.

Looking for a Breath of Fresh Air? Come to Mendocino County

The people of Mendocino County breathe some of the best air in the country, according to figures in a report released by the American Lung Association.  For ozone pollution, Mendocino ranked fifth among counties in the nation and was topped by neighboring second-ranked Humboldt and third place Lake County, the report stated.

National Public Gardens Day at the Gardens, Free Admission

Tomorrow, May 7,  is National Public Gardens Day and there is no place better to be than Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, the only public gardens in the U.S. with coastal access. Birding by Boat ~ May 16th

The Mendocino Coast Audubon pelagic trip from Fort Bragg on Sun, 16 May, still has some spaces available.  This 7+ hour trip is for both beginners and seasoned birders.  Not only do they look for seabirds (and now and again a rare individual is seen), but its a good chance to see marine mammals including a whale or two.

Welcome Back Salmon!

They said while sport fishermen enjoyed the early arrival of the tasty pink fish, they’re really looking forward to summer when the salmon should be arriving in large numbers.

The Flowers at Glass Beach

Everyone knows that Glass Beach at one time was the city rubbish heap, cleaned up now and popular among those who crave the beautiful colored glass you can find year around. But few, I suspect, would think to come here for the flowers.  The wild flowers are really amazing and appear in as many colors as the glass below the bluffs.
