 From San Francisco, if you head north along the wild, windswept California Pacific Coast, you’ll eventually reach Mendocino.

 Fifty years ago critics were poised to write Mendocino's obituary.  The former lumber town perched above the Pacific Ocean on the California coast had stumbled onto very hard times. The mill had closed and unemployment was rampant. Shops were being shuttered. Residents were looking to move out of this picturesque village to somewhere, anywhere they could find work.

 The windswept Mendocino Coast is pure California. Highway 1 twists, turns, winds, and steeply climbs, then sharply descends. At every switchback, the road opens to vistas of waves crashing onto jagged rocks. Driving the Mendocino coast is half the fun. Here are some ideas for passing the time:

 Don your sunnies, get behind the wheel and take a drive through the scenic country roads that surround the picturesque Point Arena to reach the epic shoreline of Manchester State Beach.
