Can you throw like a girl? Paul Bunyan Days says “A.W.W.W” to all Fort Bragg resident ladies. As sweet as that sounds, what it stands for is anything but – Ax-Wielding Women Wanted. This year’s Paul Bunyan Days will feature a women-only Ax Throwing competition and other logger events to be held Sunday, September 5, 2010.

Dog Fancy magazine has named Provincetown, Massachusetts, America’s most dog-friendly city. This year’s 2010 DogTown USA contest, sponsored by WAHL Clipper Corp., named the 40 dog-friendliest cities across the U.S. in honor of the magazine’s 40th anniversary.

Tour Mendocino County

  The view from my picture window was surreal. The fog had cleared from Navarro beach, and I could clearly see the foamy surf and ocean crags below. A fog bank had worked its way into the Navarro river canyon and laid out like a solid, sentient thing winding into the sequoia covered hills: amazing.

Singing and Courting

According to Ron LaValley, expert birder and talented photographer, most of the shorebirds have passed through by now, but you can still see and hear guillemots singing and courting in the mornings. Ron says he thinks some of them are on eggs in their burrows.

Go Fly A Kite!

Maybe I should say, COME fly a kite – and enjoy so much more! Saturday June 12,  noon to 4 pm at Todd Point, just west of the miniature golf course. Not certain how to get to Todd’s Point? It’s easy – just look up when you’re on Highway 1 near Highway 20, and work your way west to the sky full of kites.

The people of Mendocino County breathe some of the best air in the country, according to figures in a report released by the American Lung Association.  For ozone pollution, Mendocino ranked fifth among counties in the nation and was topped by neighboring second-ranked Humboldt and third place Lake County, the report stated.

National Public Gardens Day at the Gardens, Free Admission

Tomorrow, May 7,  is National Public Gardens Day and there is no place better to be than Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, the only public gardens in the U.S. with coastal access. Best of all its free. Additionally, the Gardens will honor two very special people and one extraordinary organization who have given so much to support Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.
