North Coast Brewing Company

North Coast Brewing Company

North Coast Brewing Co. was founded in 1988 in the historic town of Fort Bragg on California’s rugged Mendocino Coast. Under the leadership of Brewmaster Mark Ruedrich, it has developed an international reputation for producing exceptional quality beers that are distributed nationally, in Asia and Europe. The brewery has been awarded more than 80 Gold and Silver Medals in national and international tasting competitions in Denver, Chicago, Stockholm, Rio de Janeiro and elsewhere. And, it has been named by the Beverage Testing Institute, based on its blind professional tasting, as “One of the 10 Best Breweries in the World”. Recently named "Mendocino County Restaurant of the Year" plus "One of the 10 Best Breweries in the World"...not a bad combination!! The brewery and restaurant has evolved into a popular north coast tourist destination with its award-winning restaurant serving lunch and dinner, the gift shop offering brewery memorabilia and guided tours of the production facility. Open daily at noon!

North Coast Brewing is unusual in that virtually all of its brands have been singled out for recognition as superior. It’s award winners include Red Seal Ale, Scrimshaw Pilsner, Old No. 38 Stout, Blue Star Wheat Beer, Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale, Vintage-dated Old Stock Ale, Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale and Le Merle Belgian Style Saison Ale among others. In 1994, North Coast acquired the trademark rights to Acme beer, the iconic California brand with a history dating back to the 1860’s, and now produces Acme Pale Ale and Acme IPA which have also received awards.

As a “Green” company, North Coast Brewing has been a conscientious recycler keeping land fill waste at a minimum. Tons of packaging materials are recycled every year, spent grain from the brewing process is given to local farmers as animal feed and the used hops are given to gardeners for use as mulch. The brewery has conservation measures in place to minimize electricity use for lighting and water-heating purposes, and is currently investigating solar power opportunities.

The uniquely American art form of Jazz has been a corporate interest since the brewery’s founding in 1988. It supported the Coast Jazz Society and was a performance venue early on. Since the introduction of Brother Thelonious Ale in April, 2006, North Coast Brewing has further supported Jazz education through its partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. The brewery makes a donation to TMIJ for every case, keg and branded item it sells, and to date has contributed over $200,000 to the Institute to support its international education programs.

North Coast is also the official and exclusive beer sponsor of the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Healdsburg Jazz Festival and actively supports the San Francisco Jazz Festival and Humboldt County’s Redwood Jazz Alliance. In the past 5 years, the brewery has contributed over $500,000 in its support of Jazz.
